Accurate Security & Lock

Locksmith and Security Services in Mundelein, Illinois

Mundelein is a mid-sized village with residential neighborhoods, a spread of commercial districts and a notable amount of multi-unit property. The work ranges from mailbox and cabinet locks that no general handyman will touch, through household rekeying, to master key systems for apartment and retail buildings.

Mundelein produces a wider spread of jobs than most villages its size, largely because of the mix of housing and the amount of managed property. That includes the small, awkward jobs, such as a mailbox lock that has been forced or a cabinet that needs securing.

We work across the village and central Lake County. This page covers the household work, the managed-property work and the smaller lock jobs in between.

Mailbox and cabinet locks

These are small jobs that are surprisingly hard to get done. A cluster mailbox lock is a cam lock in a thin steel door, and when it has been forced the surrounding metal is usually distorted as well as the cylinder. Replacing the lock without damaging the box further requires the right cam length and the right retaining method, which is why hardware stores rarely solve it.

Cabinets present the same problem in a different form. A display case, a filing cabinet or a storage locker needs a lock that suits the material it is mounted in: a cam lock through sheet steel, a cylinder lock into a door, or a lock bar where the cabinet was never designed to be locked. Getting the mounting right matters more than the lock grade, because a lock that pulls through its mounting is not a lock.

  • Mailbox lock replacement, including cluster boxes and forced units.
  • Cam locks and cylinder locks for display cases, cabinets and lockers.
  • Lock bars where a cabinet has no suitable mounting point.
  • Replacement keys for cabinet and mailbox locks where the cylinder can be reused.
  • Rekeying so a mailbox or cabinet is not left on a previous key.

Master key systems for managed property

For apartment complexes, retail centers and other managed buildings, the recurring cost is turnover. A master key system designed around the building means each unit can be re-keyed on its own, tenants can be given a key that opens the building and their unit and nothing else, and maintenance staff can carry a sub-master that opens service areas without opening homes.

It also makes the building auditable. When a key cannot be accounted for, a hierarchy tells you exactly which cylinder has to change rather than prompting a panic re-key of everything.

Rekeying and household lock work

The ordinary residential jobs are the same as anywhere in the area: rekeying after a purchase or after a key is lost, upgrading builder-grade cylinders, correcting a door that has gone out of alignment, and fitting a keyless lock where a household is tired of distributing copies. Bringing every exterior door onto a single key is usually part of the same visit.

The alignment point is worth repeating because it is the most commonly misdiagnosed fault. A door that has to be lifted to latch is putting the closing load onto its deadbolt, which wears the cylinder and the bolt housing and eventually breaks them. Fixing the strike and hinges is the cheaper repair and the one that lasts.

Commercial premises and door hardware

On commercial doors, the components that fail are the ones taking the impact: the closer, the hinges or pivots, and the frame anchors. A door that slams because its closer is misadjusted will loosen its own frame over time, and the eventual repair is far more expensive than the adjustment would have been.

For office and retail space, the practical split is a mechanical master key system for routine control and an electrified opening only where a record of use or a time restriction is genuinely needed. On an existing door, an electric strike is usually the better route than a magnetic lock because the original latch and mechanical key keep working as a fallback.
