Accurate Security & Lock

Licensed Locksmith Service in Northern Illinois and Southern Wisconsin

General locksmith service covers the work a lock needs over its life: opening a door without a key, repairing or adjusting hardware that no longer latches, fitting and replacing locks, rekeying, and keying several doors to one key. Accurate Security & Lock has handled that work across Illinois and Wisconsin since 1995.

Accurate Security & Lock has been opening, repairing and replacing locks across Northern Illinois and Southern Wisconsin since 1995. Residential, commercial and automotive work is handled in-house, so there is no subcontractor between you and the locksmith who arrives.

A locksmith is a hardware technician who works on the thing standing between your property and everyone else. Knowing which of the four kinds of work you actually need is most of the battle, and it is the difference between paying for an adjustment and paying for a replacement.

One locksmith for every lock on a property

Our technicians carry parts for the hardware we meet most often in this region: Kwikset and Schlage residential sets, Arrow and Corbin Russwin commercial cylinders, Von Duprin and Detex exit devices, and the older mortise locks still working in pre-war homes around Elgin, Dundee and Carpentersville. Carrying those parts means a job can usually be finished on the first visit instead of ordering and returning.

We also take the jobs that are not simply a swap: doors that no longer latch because the frame has shifted, cylinders that have seized after years of hard water, and master keying that has quietly stopped matching.

What a locksmith actually does on a call-out

Most people meet a locksmith for the first time during a lockout and judge the trade on that one visit. In practice the work splits into four kinds, and the diagnosis decides the price.

  • Emergency entry: opening a door without a key and without damaging it. This is a technique problem, not a force problem. A competent locksmith picks or bypasses the cylinder and leaves the lock working. If someone proposes drilling before trying anything else, that is a decision to replace your lock at your expense.
  • Repair and adjustment: most locked-out-of-my-own-house calls are not lock failures at all. The door has swollen, the strike has moved, the hinges have dropped, or the latch no longer meets the strike plate. Those are alignment faults, and they are usually cheaper to fix than to replace.
  • Installation and upgrade: fitting new hardware, or replacing builder-grade parts that were never rated for an exterior door. This is where the specification decisions get made, including bolt throw, ANSI grade and backset.
  • Keying and access control: rekeying, master keying, restricted keyways and electronic access. The question is not which lock, but who should be able to open it and how that is taken away later.

Why lockouts are where reputations are made and lost

This trade has a well-documented problem with bait pricing: a very low quoted call-out, then a price that triples once you are standing outside and have no choice. It is worth knowing how a legitimate operator behaves before you are in that position.

  • You are given a total price before work starts, not an hourly rate that keeps running.
  • The technician tries non-destructive entry first and explains what they are doing.
  • Drilling is presented as a last resort with a reason, not as the opening move.
  • The lock works afterwards, and you are shown that it does.
  • Licence details are given when asked. Ours is Illinois licence 191.000502.

Confirm the price before a locksmith is dispatched

Confirm the address and the price on the phone, and ask whether the quote is all-in. A locksmith who will not name a figure before dispatching is not one to invite to your door.

Illinois and Wisconsin specifics that change the job

Local conditions matter more than most national advice admits. In this region we see three recurring patterns.

  • Doors that move with the seasons. The heavy clay soils of Northern Illinois swell and shrink with the water table, and freeze-thaw works on thresholds. A door that latched cleanly in October can bind by April. That is an adjustment job, not a lock replacement.
  • Hard water and seized cylinders. Mineral build-up and decades of graphite or oil in a cylinder turn into a paste that eventually stops the pins moving. Solvent, not more lubricant, is the fix.
  • Older housing stock. Pre-war homes around Elgin, Dundee and Carpentersville still carry mortise locks that most modern kits do not fit. Those need parts, and the right call is to say so on the phone rather than discover it on site.

What to have ready before a locksmith arrives

Expect to show proof that you live at or control the property, such as a driver’s license, a utility bill in your name, or confirmation from the landlord or property manager. Reputable locksmiths will ask, and a technician who opens a door for anyone who asks is a risk to every property on the street. Having it ready simply avoids a delay on the doorstep.

Frequently asked questions

What does a general locksmith service actually cover?

Lockouts and key extraction, lock repair and replacement, rekeying, deadbolt and handle-set installation, commercial hardware service, and safe or cabinet locks. If a job needs a specialist, such as a vault, a master key system or an access control installation, we handle that too rather than referring you elsewhere.

Do you charge a service call fee on top of the work?

We quote the whole job, including the call-out, before we start. You will know the total figure before a technician touches the lock, and that figure does not change because the job took longer than expected.

Which areas of Northern Illinois and Southern Wisconsin do you cover?

We work from East Dundee outwards across roughly thirty communities, including Elgin, Carpentersville, Algonquin, Crystal Lake, Huntley, McHenry, Barrington, Palatine, Arlington Heights, Wauconda, Mundelein, Grayslake and Waukegan. If you are near those areas but not on the list, call and ask, and we will tell you honestly whether we can reach you.

What should I have ready before a locksmith arrives?

Proof that you live at or control the property, such as a driver’s license, a utility bill in your name, or confirmation from the landlord or property manager. Having it ready avoids a delay on the doorstep.
