Woodstock is the McHenry County seat, with a historic Square, a large stock of Victorian and early twentieth century buildings, and working agricultural land around the city. The work here leans toward restoration: freeing and repairing original locks and safes rather than replacing them, and keeping old doors working.
Woodstock has more genuinely old fabric than most of the communities we serve. The Square and the streets around it carry buildings from the Victorian period onward, and much of the entry hardware on them is original.
We work across Woodstock and McHenry County. This page is mostly about the older end of the housing and commercial stock, because that is where the specialist work is.
Stiff and broken period locks
A lock that has become difficult is not necessarily a lock that has failed. On a period mechanism the usual causes are a worn cam, a broken spring, corrosion in the case, or a strike that no longer lines up because the door and the building have moved over a century. Each of those is repairable, and the mechanism is usually of better quality than the hardware that would replace it.
The judgement worth making early is whether the lock is stiff or actually damaged. A mechanism that can be freed, cleaned and correctly lubricated will often serve for another generation. One that has been forced repeatedly until the tailpiece or the cam gave way needs parts, and on an unusual lock those have to be found.
- Repair and servicing of period mortise and rim lock mechanisms.
- Cylinder replacement or re-pinning so no old key remains in circulation.
- Strike adjustment and reinforcement where a door has settled over time.
- Complementary deadbolts that add security without disturbing the original hardware.
- Keyless entry where a household wants out of key management.
Antique safes and strongboxes
Older commercial buildings often contain a safe that came with the premises. These are serviceable objects, and they are frequently locked with no combination, no key, or a mechanism that has not been moved in decades. We handle opening, repair and servicing.
The practical advice on an older safe is not to force it. A drilled or pried antique container is usually a write-off, and the mechanism is frequently revivable. Where the safe is to be used rather than displayed, it is also worth confirming that it is anchored and that its rating suits what is being stored.
Square storefronts and older commercial openings
Businesses on and around the Square occupy buildings where the doors are part of the character and the hardware is not standard. A modern lockset will not drop into many of these openings, and replacing the assembly means cutting new mortises and losing original detail.
The workable approach is to keep the body, deal with the failed cylinder or strike, and address the door alignment before blaming the lock. On a storefront, that alignment question is often the real issue: a door that no longer closes squarely will not latch, and it will damage its own closer and frame the longer it is left.

Farm buildings on the edge of the city
The land around Woodstock is agricultural, and properties on the outskirts typically include a barn, a machine shed or a workshop. Those buildings need hardware that stands up to weather and heavy use: a through-bolted hasp so the fixings cannot be backed out, a shrouded padlock that cannot be reached with a bolt cropper, and a strike anchored into structure rather than into the door facing.
A door that will not latch at the bottom, or a sliding door that can be lifted off its track, cannot be secured by any lock. On agricultural buildings those two faults account for more failed security than the locks themselves.
Office hours and service area
We are open Monday to Saturday, 08:30 to 17:00, and closed Sunday. For period hardware and antique safes, it helps to have a photograph before the visit so that the right tools and parts come with us.
Illinois license 191.000502 is issued by the state of Illinois, and building codes differ by state, so license and code statements here apply to Illinois only. Our service area covers Illinois and Wisconsin.
